Wheat alternariasis – problems and possibilities of using grain for fodder purposes

Safety issues of wheat grain under conditions of deterioration in the biological activity of soil lead to the growth of various fungi, including those of the genus Alternaria. These fungi produce mycotoxins that are dangerous for crops. There is no direct correlation between the levels of main metabolites (tenthoxin, tenazonic acid) and percentage of grain damage. No significant differences in essential amino acid content and digestibility were found compared to national and international standards. Grain quality parameters are characteristic of healthy grains, and nutritional values are within normal limits. At the same time, risks associated with assessment of metabolites from this fungus exist due to unknown extent of damage to grain epidermis, synergistic effects of mycotoxins, and uneven distribution. Therefore, it is necessary to continue research in this area in order to safely use this grain as feed without restrictions.
