Instrument transformers with digital output provides significant advantages, including those related to increased reliability of power system operation. With the appearance of digital instrument transformers, the topology of the measurement channel and the functional purpose of its components change. This paper considers some function migration examples from protection devices to the primary converter (digital current and voltage transformer). Combined digital transformers expand the application area of distance protection principles, increase the fault location accuracy, as well as improve sensitivity and speed of single-phase earth fault (SPF) protection in 6-35 kV networks.
