Urban Green Spaces in Cyprus: A Comparative Analysis with European Practices and Policies

Abstract
This paper provides a comparative analysis of urban green space planning and governance across four European countries — Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom with the aim of extracting policy-relevant insights for Cyprus. The study examines spatial mechanisms, policy frameworks, and multifunctional benefits in these countries, identifying transferable lessons for strengthening green infrastructure planning in the Cypriot context, where fragmented governance, limited implementation tools, and spatial inequities persist. Drawing on policy documents, statistical data, and planning instruments, the analysis explores national and local mechanisms for spatial distribution, ecological functionality, and social accessibility of green spaces, concluding with recommendations tailored to Cyprus’ urban and environmental challenges.
