Abstract
The pollution of waterways has emerged as one of the most urgent environmental problems on the planet. Hence, it is vital to innovate robust, efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment technologies to preserve water resources and water security for future generations. One of these types of technologies is electrocoagulation (EC), which is attractive due to its high efficiency, ease of operation, and sustainability. In this Scientometric study, we carried out a systematic review of 251 publications on electrocoagulation published between 2018 and July 2025 in the Web of Science. These findings show exponentially increasing research in the area of EC with a notable spike in interest observed in 2025. Scientific momentum regarding EC is mostly sustained by stronger journals like the Journal of Water Process Engineering and Journal of Cleaner Production. In future research, bibliographic coverage should encompass other bibliographic databases, and subsequent research should picture additional social and environmental connotations of EC. Overall, the findings of this study reflect the transition in wastewater management toward a more sustainable and integrated model led by electrocoagulation ultimately leading to further advancements in water treatment.
