Sport, health and environment: Family sports capital as a lever of ecological values

Abstract

This article aims to demonstrate the importance of sports socialization within social institutions such as schools, families, sports clubs, media and peers. Specifically, it focuses on socialization within families with a sports and ecological culture and its influence on the internalization and transmission of this culture to future generations. The importance of this process is traced to that fact the raising awareness about ecological issues related to sport helps encourage a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. This research adopts a sociological approach, combining document analysis and semi-structure interviews. We conducted 20 semi-structured interviews with sports families and parents whose children participate in associations or sports clubs. The results show that the sports habits transmitted within the family play a key role in transmitting sports culture to children. At the same time, the cultural capital of parents linked to sport strongly influences the establishment of sports norms and values that promote environmental preservation and the adoption of a more sustainable lifestyle in terms of hygiene and well-being.
