Applications of Micro Phasor Measurement Units for Enhancing Situational Awareness in Smart Power Distribution Networks: An Integrated Part of Smart City

Abstract
Smart cities require reliable and intelligent power infrastructure to ensure efficient energy management and sustainability. Smart Grid (SG) technology integrates Information and Communication Technology (ICT), advanced sensors, and control systems to enable real-time monitoring and improved situational awareness. In this paper, optimal placement of micro phasor measurement units using a General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS)-based Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) approach is proposed for the IEEE 33-bus distribution system. The study also investigates the impact of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCSs) and Distributed Generators (DGs) under different operating scenarios. The results demonstrate improved voltage observability, enhanced voltage profile, reduced power losses, and lower execution time compared to conventional monitoring methods.
