Abstract
Landfill gas – LFG is a renewable energy resource. In developing countries, landfilling is a dominant method of waste management and large fractions of waste is biodegradable. If properly designed and operated, these landfills can generate LFG with big share of methane. Quantity of LFG available for electrical energy production depend on several factors. This paper aim is to define LFG to energy potential of sanitary landfills in Serbia. LandGEM model, combined with the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) methodology for Central Eastern Europe, was used to estimate generated LFG. Based on this estimation, energy potential was determined. Results show that in 2025 sanitary landfills in Serbia could produce 281,661 MWh yr-1. For the next ten years cumulative potential is 2,484,204 MWh yr-1.
