Abstract
Objective: to review the ongoing activities of the world's largest railway carrier, the Russian Railways company, aimed at implementing the principles and goals of sustainable development, the implementation of environmentally friendly and environmentally safe transportation. Methods: analysis of strategic documents, monitoring, observation, synthesis, generalization and systematization. As a result of the conducted research: the main directions and activities of the implemented environmental strategy of Russian Railways until 2035 are summarized and systematized; The stage-by-stage implementation of the Baikal without Plastic project is shown; the hypothesis of the economic justification for the implementation of the concept of waste management in railway transport, taking into account the principles of a closed-cycle economy, which brings the Russian Railways company a significant economic effect, is confirmed. Conclusion: one of the key principles of sustainable development for any transport organization is the systematic reduction in the scale of environmental pollution, combined with the implementation of measures that transform waste streams into an additional source of revenue (an environmental driver of value added).
