The paper addresses a mathematical model of the transient process in a pipeline, namely, a water hammer model. Based on this model, a mixed problem for a system of partial differential equations of hyperbolic type is set. In this paper, we obtain formulas for the exact solution of the Cauchy problem for a linear homogeneous hyperbolic system. We compare the effectiveness of explicit and implicit numerical methods for solving a simplified system of water hammer equations.
