The realization of sustainable development goals is one of the leading trends of scientific research in recent years. There are quite a lot of publications devoted to the environmental component of sustainable development, which cannot be said about the assessment of the environmental potential of business systems. More often we are talking about strategic environmental assessment of projects, the effectiveness of environmental management, environmental sustainability and responsibility. But if an organization does not have the appropriate capacity, it is hardly possible to solve these issues. The environmental potential of an organization is an effective tool for implementing the goals of responsible production and consumption, as it characterizes the opportunities, resources and conditions for the formation of a business ecosystem that meets the needs of both present and future generations. The mechanism of its assessment is an important tool in the environmental management system and requires a systematic approach to its development. The purpose of the study was to analyze the essence of the concept, methods of measurement and factors that determine the environmental potential. As a result of the study, conclusions were drawn about the need to take into account a number of requirements in the formation of a method of measuring the environmental potential of the organization, which is the subject of this article. The proposed approach is of a framework nature, as the list of indicators of environmental potential can always be expanded and refined taking into account the specifics of industry characteristics and the profile of the organization's activities.
