Earthen embankments and earth and rock dams along rivers are often used to double as highways, which makes the embankments subject to the effects of seepage of water as well as top loading of the embankment. In order to investigate the effects of steady state water level seepage and top load on the slope stability of an earth embankment, a homogeneous earth embankment was modeled using finite element software, and slope stability analyses were carried out under different operating conditions. The results show that both steady-state seepage and top-of-embank loading have a negative effect on the stability of the earthen embankment, and the negative effect will be greater under coupling.
