Water hammer, or hydraulic shock, is an overpressure caused by a sudden change in flow boundary conditions. To control this phenomena and improve the reliability and longevity of pipeline conveying transient flow , a replacing part of the main pipe with a plastic pipe segment can be an effective solution. This work is carried out in the case of a one-dimensional transient flow. The set of partial differential equations to be solved is of the hyperbolic type and is ideally suited to the method of characteristics. The effect of the plastic pipe element on the overpressure generated by the water hammer is examined
