This article offers a new approach to study social issues in Russian rural settlements. Our approach is based on the analysis of digital footprints left by the rural population in the largest Russian social network VKontakte (VK). Our approach is based on the social media data and two methods of the digital analysis – big data and data mining. For this study we used negative-sounding messages and posts published in some communities of rural settlements from 10 (out of 85) Russian regions. We used PolyAnalyst software for the automatic analysis of such messages to identify 10 groups of issues deteriorating quality of life in those rural settlements. These issues include those of the housing and utilities infrastructure, of the capital improvement and of the transportation infrastructure; environmental issues, issues with availability and poor quality of the telecommunication and banking infrastructure; healthcare and education issues; safety issues; various economic issues; issues related to homeless and neglected animals (dogs); alcohol abuse and inefficiency of the authorities in rural settlements.
