Comparative Study of Regenerative Braking Impact on Various Battery Technologies for Electric Vehicles Using MATLAB Simulations

The integration of regenerative braking systems in electric vehicles (EVs) has become a focal point in the pursuit of enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability. This paper presents a comprehensive MATLAB simulation study that investigates the impact of regenerative braking on the performance and lifespan of four distinct battery technologies: Lithium-Ion, Lead-Acid, Nickel-Cadmium, and Nickel-Metal-Hydride and guides which battery best for EV application. The simulation framework employs realistic driving scenarios to emulate the dynamic conditions encountered by EVs in everyday usage. Through a systematic analysis, we evaluate the effectiveness of regenerative braking in terms of energy recovery and its influence on the charging and discharging characteristics of each battery type. The results of the simulation are presented, providing valuable insights into the comparative performance of the different battery chemistries under the influence of regenerative braking and at different weather conditions.
