From a national development perspective for the advancement of the Indonesian nation, the construction of Yogyakarta International Airport on the southern coast aims to create a regional development center, transforming it into an airport city. From a national security and protection perspective, the airport’s vital location in an open area facing other countries represents a center of gravity, containing both strengths and vulnerabilities. Therefore, managing and organizing space toward a safe and secure environment in the long term requires an effective defense zone to maintain the stability of defense and security protection in the nation’s front yard. Based on spatial and environmental awareness, this study aims to determine the extent and distribution of effective protection zones in the area surrounding Yogyakarta International Airport. This study utilizes terrain analysis using the GIS-based Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method, guided by the assessment of operational agility, namely the ability to exploit opportunities for movement and maneuver in military operations. Based on the combined physical aspects of the land, consisting of the natural physical environment of the earth’s surface and the artificial physical environment of the earth’s surface, using overlay union analysis, the area is 3,873.43 hectares, or 61.45% of the total area.
