Kawi Pilgrimage Tourism for Sustainable Rural Development

Gunung Kawi tourism has won the title amidst public interest in pilgrim tourism. Even though Gunung Kawi has a strong presence in the pilgrim tourism sector, it has not been able to provide relevance for nature management and community economic development. This research aims to critically examine the development of pilgrimage tourism in Gunung Kawi Village, Wonosari, Malang, which is known as an important spiritual destination. By using a qualitative approach and intrinsic case studies, it shows that pilgrimage tourism in Gunung Kawi has deep cultural and historical significance, contributes to the local economy, but also faces various challenges. Culturally, the place maintains its traditional heritage with annual rituals and community practices that attract pilgrims from various regions. Economically, pilgrimage tourism brings financial benefits to local residents through increasing businesses such as accommodation, culinary delights and souvenir sales. However, there are various issues related to Kawi tourism that involve cultural, social, and ethical aspects. Here are some of the issues that have emerged and ideas for reform that may be relevant, Negative Image and Potential for Abuse, Uncontrolled Ritual Practices, Uneven Economic Impacts, Environmental DamageOther challenges include environmental isuesdue to increased tourist activity, cultural erosion due to commercialization, and limited infrastructure. hindering the tourist experience as well as growth potential.
