Environmental self-identity (ESI) is a key factor in promoting sustainable behaviours. Hence, it is crucial to find the antecedents that can shape environmental self-identity. The present study conducted a questionnaire survey (N = 478) to verify the roles of past sustainable behaviours and biospheric values in developing environmental self-identity among Chinese women. The results revealed that both past sustainable behaviours and biospheric values had a significant and positive correlation with ESI. Furthermore, biospheric values partially mediated the relationship between past sustainable behaviours and ESI. These findings provide a theoretical framework for policy making and implementation, and practical foundation for empowering the leading role of women in households and in developing green families.
